The 2017 season was a test of physical and emotional resolve! In particular, weather related events hit very hard during vulnerable periods for Pinot Noir with demoralising losses of 70% of the crops. Though quantities are therefore well down, the finished wines from this "challenging" season have quickly established themselves as wines of quality, character, distinction and a source of great delight
The wines show their hallmark of elegance coexisting with intensity of fine savoury earthy flavours. There’s a subtle hint of dry herb and spice - but that in itself is part of the complexity of character. Once again the terroir for the L’ami sageand Les cinqsingle vineyard wines speak so clearly and distinctly. We maintain a very consistent approach to the viticulture, harvest and vinification yet they each present as such unique individuals!
L’ami sagehas intense, enticing darker red fruit aromas followed by the expected savoury, fleshy and earthy character of this wine. The Les cinqin 2016 reflects more perfume and elegance, yet, paradoxically exhibiting both subtlety and power. The fine, abundant tannin structurebuilds on the palate and as with the Les cinq, there is a generosity together with a long complex and balanced fresh finish. Whilst these wines are delicious to enjoy now, we believe cellaring for 15 or more years will delight the patient collector.
